TETRIS©Table

Personal Project - to inlay a table with tessellating TETRIS lights

Main Materials: Table, TETRIS© lights, toughened glass

Techniques: Basic woodwork

This was a very simple but effective enhancement of a flat-pack table using multiple tessellating TETRIS© lights.

The tetriminos from several sets were laid out into a square and measured to determine the dimensions of the hole to be cut out of the table top, which was done with a jigsaw.

The table top was hollowed out, with a hole cut in one corner of the bottom layer for the electrical connection. The remaining space within the surrounding perimeter was filled with wood, as the tetriminos needed a solid surface to but up against so that they pack tightly together (electricity is passed through the lights by their edges touching).

To fill the entire surface of the table top, some tetriminos had to sit within the perimeter where recesses in the wood packers had to be cut out. A sheet of toughened glass was bought and laid over the lights to complete the table. The process was repeated for a larger table.
